We have been hearing for quite some time now that the fossil energy sources are not only depleting, but also that their usage is causing global warming with their generation of greenhouse gasses. When this was first investigated there was a realization that alternative energy sources needed to be found.

Alternative energy is a fairly broad term and simply means energy gained from sources other than fossil fuels. The greatest and most worldwide successful of the alternative power sources is nuclear energy. Nevertheless, as we are all aware there are potential problems with nuclear plants and their effects. The other category you may have heard about is renewable energy sources. These are a subset of alternative power. They are complementary to fossil fuels, but contrary to nuclear they are naturally replenished. The most apparent of these are wind and solar power.

The renewable energy sources are ways of harnessing what nature presents to us. It is the closest we can get to working with out planet.

The issues is why are all of us not all running our residences on renewable power? Start by having a look at the history of solar power. Solar power is now very easy to install in the average home and can be easily harnessed. The problems which were initially encountered were that the solar panels which were used to 'catch' the sun energy were glass protected and were very heavy and were therefore not suitable for many buildings.

Some building have been designed and built specifically to harness wind and solar power and these homes are very sought after, but if we are going to convert homes to solar power we need to be able to convert existing home, rather than just the new builds. The creation of the thin film solar panel has overcome this problem. The thin film is exactly what it say - it is thin and hence lightweight. This means that nearly every building can be fitted with these solar panels.

Suddenly we can all have alternative energy; so why don't we? During the advancement of solar panels and wind farms, the nuclear capacity was being harnessed, with nuclear power stations being built all over the world. Industry and governments are, understandable, not prepared to walk away from the investment they have made into these fuels.

The best we can hope for at the moment is for the domestic market to be primarily sourced by renewable energy and leave industry to carry on with nuclear, until such time that it is either compelled to change or it is financially and economically sensible for that change. Governments around the world are keen to start to make the transition away from fossil fuels and as a result there are many grants available to help people make the transition from traditional energy sources to solar power.
